WHAT WE OFFER

We offer a variety of pasture raised proteins, including pork, chicken, quail & turkey. Farm fresh eggs from our chickens, quail & turkeys are also available. All of our animals are fed an organic diet in addition to naturally foraged plants, seeds and more.

While the kids are loving their third snow day, the chickens and goats were over it on day one. Simon, our great pyrenees puppy, has no complaints about the snow or the low temperatures.

On one hand, the snow makes things a little tougher to do around the farmstead. On the other, it allows me to slow down and focus on preparations for this year. I much prefer the snow to the rain, that's for certain.

Simply pho nomenal.

With temps being in the low 40s and under, Phô Gà was a must.

Our pasture raised chicken slow roasted, deboned and simmered with ginger and @daydreamfarm.wa onions. Served piping hot and topped with @cabrera_farm cilantro, @daydreamfarm.wa green and yellow onions. Finished with thai basil, hoison, Sriracha & @meeshes_chilioil

2024 was a whirlwind. Reflections of this year have left me with mixed emotions. There were so many moments of joy, pride & accomplishment. Yet, sorrow and sadness filled the year as well.

We lost all our cayuga ducks to an eagle as well as our rooster, Lando. Tinsel's sudden passing has still left our hearts heavy. Buck, our hedgehog, is now buried beneath the willow tree next to Tin. And we had to say goodbye to friends who moved away.

Despite the hardships and loss, there was triumph and new life. We provided our local community with pasture raised meats. New friendships were built. We created a poultry processing rental package with the help of @americanfarmlandtrust . Black australorp hens joined the farm as our new layers. And Simon became the newest member of our family.

2025 planning has begun. I am realistic about the challenges and obstacles we will face though I remain optimistic about what lies ahead.

What does success mean to you?

Success is often mistaken by quantity not quality. As a society, we are led to believe "more" is the true measurement of success and overlook the value of achievement.

Success to me is achieving the goals you set for yourself. I don't believe success is measured in numbers. It cannot be measured by someone else and it's certainly not comparable to another's.

Often times, I think we forget to thank the people behind the scenes. My parents, my kids and Brian do an immense amount of jobs and tasks that make this operation a success. Without them, this would have all stayed an idea, a wish or a thought. To our customers, our success also goes out to you. Without you, we could not continue to grow and progress.

Success: noun. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.

Officially welcome our newest edition, Simon.

Simon has been home with us about a month now. He is incredibly smart and a quick learner. With that comes a little stubbornness but we are so thankful to have him join our family.

A huge thank you to @lydias_flock for raising such a wonderful breed. Her great pyrenees are a testament to her dedication to providing solid working dogs.

As our turkey season is coming to a close, I'd like to pay homage to these beautiful birds.

Though their size and colours are stunning, I'd be lying if I said these gorgeous birds didn't stress me out this year. Raising both our bourbon reds and broad breasted bronze on pasture is hard work. Protecting them from aerial predators and coyotes has been an intense experience.

Turkeys are great alarm systems and let you know when anything is out of the ordinary. Curious creatures who are always interested in what's going on over "there". I will miss seeing them strutting around and exploring the pastures.

We've come to the end of our fifth season.

Our pasture raised chickens have all been processed for the year and we're thankful. Walking the thick, lush fields they lived on is proof of our dedication to good stewardship.

Rotational grazing, while at times feels like quite the pain in the ass, improves the quality of the pasture & our livestock. By partnering with nature instead of competing with it, the soil is able to give back year after year.

Oh, September.

September brings on a whole new level of busy. It's the last big push before we start slowing down for winter. Filled with long days as there is still much to do.

It's a race to get the essentials stockpiled, the seeds saved, the harvest in and preserved.

It's also the most rewarding time. We get to see how our hard work throughout the year has paid off.

This year we are offering two options for turkeys. Broad breasted bronze and heritage bourbon reds. Turkeys are $7/lb plus $15 c&w. A deposit of $25 per bird secures your order. (Pictured: bourbon red 12lbs)

Why does a rooster crow in the morning?

To signal to the hens that the coast is clear. Roosters are diligent about their job as protectors. They are the first ones out of the coop in the morning to check for predators and only crow if it is safe. Only then do the hens emerge from the coop.

Mando is our last wyandotte rooster. He is in charge of keeping our ladies safe. Sadly, we lost our head rooster, Lando, to an eagle a few short weeks ago.

I've had this up my sleeve for a while now...

I wanted to do something to support my fellow homesteaders and small farms so I put together a poultry processing rental package for you.

Originally, I had envisioned providing processing services & classes but I simply cannot while working 40-60 hours a week off-farm.

Currently, I am finishing up the details of the rental agreement/contract so this is a sneak peak at what the package will include.

July is the most beautiful month. July will also push you to your limits.

There is so much to do this time of year. The garden needs tending, hay needs baled, chickens will be processed & everything is ripe. Not to mention all the daily to-dos and something usually rears its ugly head at the most inopportune time.

July is filled with long days. The long days and the hard work will soon prove rewarding. It's just trying not to lose your mind before then.

Whether it be due to illness, breeding or aggression, making the decision to cull an animal is never easy. It is one of the least talked about things when it comes to this lifestyle. Why? Because it plain ol' sucks.

Nonetheless, aggressive animals will not be tolerated. Period. With that being said, a few of our male quail went to freezer camp today who couldn't get their act together.

How's your garden coming along?

We are a little behind on planting this season but that's okay. I planted a variety of seeds this week including these tendergreen beans from @pinetree_garden_seeds These are my favourite variety of green beans. I was able to harvest seeds from last year's crop to sow this year.

As we make the switch to australorps, it's time to find my current layers new homes.

Yesterday, I said goodbye to my wyandotte gals. They went to a loving home at @harknesshomestead.

My original silver laced wyandottes will live out their days here on the farmstead. The sales from their eggs began our journey.

I know, it's only May but it's time to secure your farm fresh table bird.

This year we will be offering both heritage & broad breasted turkeys. If you are needing a bird 16+lbs, these will be our most limited number of birds so don't hesitate.

Our turkeys will be available for both Canadian & American Thanksgiving. If you wish to enjoy one of our turkeys during Christmas dinner, they will be available for pick up in November.

Yesterday, we welcomed our newest farmstead members. Twenty black australorps to become our future laying hens.

We are making the switch from wyandottes to australorps this year. Dual-purpose chickens are ideal for homesteaders working towards sustainability and are better suited for harsh conditions.
